New and great Technology : It allows a person to interact with computers and robotics :
for those who suffer from paralysis or have lost the ability to speak from a stroke or neurodegenerative disease.Scientist put small electrodes on or inside the brain.They developed a technology to patients able to interact with computers.This is so helpful to stroke patients.This technology could improve communication and daily life for a person who is paralyzed or has lost the ability to speak from a stroke or neurodegenerative diseases.This is called Brain Computer Interface.Brain computer interface system controlling computer with their thoughts .

Brain Computer Interface is an amazing discovery of modern science,that also gives a new hope to the medical science,This is a highly complicated communication sysytem related to human brain.This sysytem do not depend on the brain’s normal output pathways of peripheral nerves and muscles.

This New BrainGate interface sysytem helps patients with spinal cord injury, stroke, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or limb loss turn their thoughts into actions.This increase such persons independence.Paralayzed people lost their brain’s connection to their bodies so they are not able to do everyday things that we can do like reach for a glass of water or scratch their nose etc.It is really dibilitating.Some severe strokes cut the pathway from the brain to the spinal cord.Reasearchers trying to bypass those damagesd nervous system and go directly from the brain to outside world.Their target is to control those brain signals using machines like a computer or robotic limb instead of Muscles.This trial is really called Brain Gate.According to them the first success happen in 2006.This brain computer interface has three components,1.A sensor ,2. A computer 3. an assisitive technology.The sensor is a tiny ray electrodes connected with a bundle of gold wires.The brain activity recorded by the computer and then it instruct the assisitve technology.

For this participants undergo surgical procedure to fix a small sensor smaller than a contact lens to the area of the brain responsible for movements.This sensor records the electrical siggnals from the brain and these signals fed into a device where they are interpreted by operator using special software.

Such Participant who included in this study can control a cursor on a computer screen.when cursor control is established the brain gate system could be used to drive various computer applications and enviornmental control devices.participant can achive by using their thoughts.

The research team fromn Brown university conducted the study. BrainGate is based on research and technology developed in the laboratory of John Donoghue, the Henry Merritt Wriston Professor of Neuroscience at Brown and director of the Brown Institute for Brain Science. Arto Nurmikko, professor of engineering, and Michael Black, professor of computer science, are also key research partners on this team. More than a dozen Brown undergraduate and graduate students have helped advance the research and technology.

Two Brown faculty members are leading the research: Donoghue and Dr. Leigh Hochberg, associate professor of engineering at Brown and a vascular and critical care neurologist at MGH, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
